For the Winter Weary

~ Pansies Blooming on the Patio ~

Most mornings during breakfast Brett will read to me the expected weather forecast for Michigan.  Today the newspaper showed a high of 9 and a low of -5.  We looked at each other and said "how did we ever stand it?"
Having moved south 15 years ago, we are freezing when the temperatures dip into the 30s.  Ha!  Yes, we are officially wimps.
While I will admit to missing the beauty of a freshly fallen snow,
I remember how January, February and March could seem to drag on a bit too long for my liking.  Those gray days and cold temperatures began to take a toll.  Some years it seemed like Spring would never arrive.
I know many people love winter weather and I think that's great.
But, if you are looking through winter weary eyes about now, I'm here to tell you Spring is in the air.

After my walk today I went to fill the birdfeeder and check for early signs of Spring.
There amongst the pine needles and dead leaves were tender green daffodil shoots poking their heads up.

Right above the daffodils I noticed plump buds covering the branches of the dogwood trees.

At first glance it seemed like all members of the perennial bed were still fast asleep for their winter nap.
Upon closer inspection I found one early bird getting ready to rise and shine.  It won't be long now.

If you are a lover of long, snowy winters, then don't pay any attention to my ramblings today.  Carry on and enjoy the beauty of the season.
On the other hand, if winter is wearing on you about now...
hang in there.
Spring is on the way.

  1. I needed to come here today. Today, in the middle of yet another huge winter storm. Now, I am a fan of fall and winter, but your post gave me a gentle nudge, reminding me that it is coming. Spring will be here, and your lovely photography made me eager for it's arrival. The pansies are so beautiful! The candle on the last picture depicted a cozy, warm, home, just like I know yours is. Thanks so much for sharing this post with us. It really did lift my spirits.

  2. We are actually loving winter. I never realized how much I liked snow until we moved here.
But I do like spring too and will be happy when it comes along. Not for a long time here though. I can't believe the daffodils have started to come up already by you!!!

  3. I love that candle lamp, Kim! I'm so excited for you, having green stuff popping up already! I'm so thankful for the sunshine even though gardening weather is a long way off.

  4. Fun to see that your spring is coming soon. Mine is several months down the line and I'll be blessed if it comes on schedule. Your pansies are striking!

  5. Oh the southern spring comes so early doesn't it. We're on the verge of a nor'easter snow storm here tomorrow and it will be -20 tonight (below zero F) so any signs of spring are a joy to see. Actually, my daffodils popped up about an inch through the ground last week during the thaw. I had to put boughs over them as I knew this cold snap was coming. They'll live and bloom in April. Or May.

  6. I can see similar signs of spring in my garden, too. But I still long for sunshine and warmth. How lovely to see your pansies - they are so cheerful and certainly brighten the landscape.

  7. I am weary of the cold winter. Glad to see spring is coming somewhere. It's going to be a long time before we see it here. :(

  8. I'm not a fan of winter, but the days are going by so fast that spring will be here before I know it. I can't wait to see green grass again and flowers!

  9. It's nice to see a bit of spring coming your way. After the snow melts, which will probably be today or tomorrow, I will go out and look for signs of spring too! The snow is pretty, but I am ready for some warmer weather.

  10. I love pansies and hope to grow some this spring! The weather here in our area of Colorado has been very mild this winter and I have to admit I'm enjoying it. We've had some cold snowy days but then the sun and blue skies come out and it's in the 60's again! It is definitely a nice change from NYC's cold and dreary winters.
