Starting Summer in the Kitchen

Last night I put a pan of blondies in the oven and while they were baking I decided to do a little summer spruce up on my kitchen shelves.

In honor of the first day of Summer, I brought out Susan Branch's Summer book and rather liked how the blue and white checks matched the ones on my mugs.
The cherries you see propped against the book are a recent find from the thrift shop.  They're made out of chalk ware and have a little hanger on the back.  Do you remember those from the way back machine?  My mom once had some that were fish complete with bubbles.  They made quite a statement in our 1960s era bathroom.

Now that my shelves are decorated, I'm ready for Summer.
Tonight we're going to an outdoor concert overlooking the lake.
The blondies will be part of the picnic we'll be sharing with our neighbors.  It's the first time I've made this recipe, so I hope it turns out well.  It sure does smell good.

The salt & pepper shakers are ready for Summer too.
How about you ~ are you ready?

~ Happy First Day of Summer 2013 ~

  1. Oh your shelves look great for summer. Yes, I remember those sweet little chalkware wall hangings. I have a Dutch girl string holder that is a wall hanging in my sewing room now. I'd love to find something so summery as cherries.

Your evening sounds like so much fun. What a great way to start the summer.

If those blondies are good (I've never heard of them), will you share the recipe?

  2. Kim, your whatnot shelf looks so sweet with the summery decor on it. I love the vintage look to it. I have a set of four fruits (peach, bananas, grapes, pear) that hang on the wall next to my kitchen window. They were my aunt's and probably from the 60's. Happy Summer to you! Pamela

  3. I love all things Susan Branch and have her Summer book. I am as ready as I'll ever be for summer. Tonight I am going to see "Menopause the Musical". Maybe I'll learn how to deal better with hot flashes! lol xo

  4. Vee,
Yes, I will be happy to share the recipe in a future post. Stay tuned.

  5. I love your summer kitchen!! We like the same colors. Don't you love Susan Branch's illustrations? I remember when she used to have her illustrated recipes in Country Living magazine, back in the 80's.

  6. I'm ready. And waiting! Hope your blondies were a hit. They look yummy!

  7. Your kitchen shelves are so pretty and just perfect for summer.
I can't wait to get to my new house and put everything in place!! : )
The blondies look delicious. I'm sure they turned out great.
    What a fun evening.

  8. Your shelves look summery sweet. Love the matching checks on your dishes and the Susan Branch book.
I'm ready for summer! Bring it on!

  9. Your hydrangeas in your previous post are gorgeous.... sure wish they'd grown here.

Your shelves look so fresh and summery and very pretty.

The brownies look very good too! The summer concert sounds like so much fun....

  10. Hi Kim. A picnic with blondies and a concert at the lake sounds wonderful! Your shelves looks so pretty. I always enjoy your kitchen.

  11. Your shelves take on the seasons so perfectly! The soft yellows and blues look so pretty and seem like a good way to welcome summer. Not to mention blondies from the oven...oh, my goodness, they look so good!
