Who You Gonna Call?

When my mom used to visit, she had the habit of leaving little gifts for me to find.  The magnet above was one such gift.  I found it after she left and had to laugh.  Back then we lived in different states, but talked on the phone at least once a week.  My mom was also an early bird.  Me ~ not so much.  In those days she would often call me when I was still lounging in bed thinking about starting my day.  I must admit that I often wondered why she had to call sooo early.

But, that was then and this is now.

Now, it wouldn't matter if she called at 5 a.m., I'd gladly pick up that phone and talk.  In fact, I might even follow the advice on her magnet and call her before she had the chance to call me.  If she were to call today I'd wish her a Happy 87th Birthday.

It's true what they say about absence making the heart grow fonder.

With that thought in mind I'm making it a higher priority to call my brother on a regular basis.  He lives on one side of the country and I'm on the other.  Though we get along just fine, distance makes it hard to feel close sometimes.  Sadly, there are times when I hesitate to call because I feel like I don't know him very well anymore.  I don't like that feeling so I've resolved to make a better effort at communication.  I think I'll call him at least once a month.  But I promise not to call at the crack of dawn.

Is there anyone that you've put off calling?
If so, now might be the best time.

  1. A very sweet post Kim, and thank you for reminding me of the importance of staying in touch, and yes it is so easy to lose that closeness, as I have experienced it.
Enjoy your day. You will be in my thoughts and prayers today as you are remembering your dear mother's birthday.
    Hugs,
    Sue

  2. I would give anything some days if I could just pick up the phone and call my mom...I so would just like to discuss things with her! She has been gone 11 years now.

  4. Yes, there was someone and I got up and made that call and forgot to come back. My mind is a sieve. My phone rarely rings anymore now that my mother is safely home. I certainly do miss taking her calls and being able to call her.

  5. Hi Kim, I wish I could tell everyone to not neglect calling and staying in touch because life is short and you might not have another chance. Besides my hubby and children, who I give thanks for every day, the only family I have left is an aunt and she is almost 85. But we get together as often as we can and also email. She doesn't like to talk on the phone. But she's a whiz on the computer! Knows more than I ever will! Great post, take care.

  6. Kim, I know exactly how you feel. My mom, like yours, was a victim of Alzheimers. I used to call her early because at that time she would usually remember who I was. As the day progressed, so did the disease. She's been gone for years, but I wish I could dial that number and she'd answer, because I miss our conversations on those early mornings. We're so blessed to have had good moms!

  7. Your beautiful post is such a good and timely reminder to stay in touch with those we love. It's so easy to put off calling or visiting.....and time does get away so quickly.

    Have a good weekend!

  8. Like you, I'd gladly accept an early morning phone call from my mom...or my mom-in-law. My mother would have been 85 this month.

Thanks for the reminder to stay in touch!

  10. A great reminder for all of us. We need to express our love and concern for those we love more often. Too soon does the rose fade and then is gone.

  12. I talked to two of my sons on the same day and we said we need to call more often! We let too much time go by! I don't live near any of my family and I sure do miss them! ♥

  13. Hi, just found your blog over at Farmer's Daughter. I'm looking forward to reading some of your previous posts.
This is a touching post. My mother and I were very close, so I can understand your feelings on her birthday.

  14. Hi Kim,
I have three siblings still living and talk to them weekly. It takes time and effort but we all stay in touch. I'm so glad that we have remained close, while scattered from MI, SC and FL. We all have been together in July and Nov. for my mom's 85th birthday. That doesn't happen everry year but we do stay in touch.
Your post was a great reminder and prompt to keep loved ones close.
    Relationships are everything!
    Hugs to you!
