The Flower Cross

One of my favorite traditions at church on Easter Sunday is the flower cross.  I had never seen this done until I moved to North Carolina.  The cross sits outside the doors of the church as an empty structure made out of chicken wire.  Everybody is invited to bring a few flowers to add to it.  Most of them are cut from backyard gardens and it's always so fun to see how they all come together to create such a pretty cross.   By the time the service begins, the cross looks like this.  As we sing the opening hymn, the cross is wheeled into the church.
Once the service is over, it is wheeled outside where it becomes a popular backdrop to family Easter photos.

I love this flower cross and I also love looking at the children in their Easter outfits (A-dorable) and I especially love to listen to the powerful voices of the choir singing The Hallelujah Chorus.  Always, always moves me to tears.

What are your favorite Easter traditions?

  1. That is a lovely tradition. All my memories of Easter are from my younger days, surrounded by family, food and a big egg hunt in my Mammaw's backyard. We did such activities when the kids were little, but things are different now. Time sure does change things. Wishing you a great week ahead. Tammy

  2. This is the first time I've seen this tradition and I can tell why you like it so much. It'd be far preferable to all those strongly-scented lilies that most churches use. My favorite Easter tradition used to be sunrise service, though I've not made it to one of those in years. I guess my favorite now is gathering with family as we did yesterday.

  3. How beautiful...the cross decked in fresh blooms! What a neat tradition. I would love to hear the choir singing the Hallelujah chorus at Easter. Around here we usually hear at at Christmas.

My favorite Easter traditions are the Good Friday and Easter services...our favorite Easter foods (paska included)...the Easter egg hunt with the grands...and time with family around the table.

  9. What a beautiful idea, and until tonight I had not heard of the flower cross tradition. And your church's flower cross is beautiful. and like you the music always touches my heart.
I think I will mention this to our church leadership.
As always such a pleasure visiting you.

  10. I havae never seen a flower cross. That is so beautiful!
Our church is always decorated with the white Easter lilies. Just once they need to spice it up!
I did make the danish twist, it's a family recipe. It's a pretty easy yeast bread, if you'd like the recipe just let me know.
Oh, and we use homemade blackberry jelly in it, but then any kind will work.

  11. What a beautiful tradition! I never saw that done before and think it is so appropriate and meaningful way to share the cross. I would love to start that tradition in our part of the country. Thank you for sharing it. By the way, your new updated blog look is outstanding! The way you share beauty always inspires me.
