Hearts @ Home

This morning I spent some time writing out cards for February birthdays and Valentine's Day.  For years I have been buying my cards at Hallmark.  I've just always thought they had the prettiest ones.  Every year for as long as I can remember I'd go there after Christmas when they marked them down and bought my cards for the next year.  When I went to do that after Christmas this past year, I noticed that every single box of cards that I picked up was "Made in China."  I put them down and left.  Right then and there I decided I wasn't sending another card unless it said ...

This is one of the small things I am doing to support American workers.  With our economy in such sad shape,  I'm a bit tired of supporting China.  In fact, all of my purchases are getting closer scrutiny.  Okay, stepping off the soapbox now ;-).

Once I got my American made Valentine's into the mailbox, I debated whether I had any interest in digging Valentine's decorations out of the attic.

After all, they would only be out for a few days before it would be time to haul them back to the attic.

Hardly seems worth it.

Does it?

What about you?
Are there Valentine's decorations up at your house?

I'm leaning towards leaving that box up in the attic because as I was walking around pondering this big decision, it occurred to me that ...

and I think that is good enough for me this year.

  1. Kim, what a sweet post. I have not decorated for Valentine's Day, and I don't usually. It comes and goes so fast.
I so agree with you about buying American made products. I think every little bit helps. Seems like everything is made in China these days.

    Enjoy your week,
    Hugs,
    Donna

  2. Hi KIm
I'm with you, I'm not making the effort at this late of date. I will do something special for hubby and we'll leave our cards out for a while to admire.
Good for you for buying American made!

  3. Two or three...not very many. I was going to buy some Valentines candy to put out, but didn't do that either. Now I'm going to check on a certain moose and find out where he was made. 8}

  5. The cards for Valentines day are all so pretty. I bought a few from the thrift store this week that were from Current. I remember ordered Current cards years ago! ♥

  6. Oh how nice to see all those hearts.
I'm with you on not buying Made in China!
I don't put out decorations but I sure enjoyed looking at yours. : )
Thanks so much for those kind words you left on my blog - they made me cry! : )
Someday we have to meet in person!!!

  7. I haven't decorated for Valentine's Day since my kids were young and at home. I'll buy cards and maybe a small box of candy. Hubby usually gets me flowers which I put on the table and that's the extent of my decorating!
Thanks for the reminder to look for American made products.

  8. Ha ha! Every day is heart day around here, too! I just sprinkle a little Valentine sparkle around my classroom. The "doings" that happen around Valentine's Day really amp up my cute sixth graders. I love all the red and pink at the stores, but I rarely buy a lot. I think I may work on cards this weekend, writing encouraging messages. We'll see.
I love all your hearts, Kim. Well, I really love YOUR dear warm beating heart most of all!

  10. Kim, I agree with you in your "made in America" comments. I too am giving tags on the products I buy, more scrutiny. It just seems right to buy things made in America. I liked your soap box moment:)

As for your boxed decorations, I think it would have been sad to keep such lovely decorations in the attic. I find that you are so gifted in creating vignettes and adding touches of beauty to every season. Your new banner pictures are beautiful and made me happy as soon as I got to your blog. Adding the heart to home is so important. Thanks for sharing "your heart" today.

  11. If all of us would boycott made in China products, we would help our economy. Good for you.

No decorations for me...just Valentine candy.

I love this sweet post and pictures.

  12. Ironically, a co-worker had ordered new hanging folders for the office. They were made in the US. But in order to save money, our supply guy ordered more of a similar folder but this time made in China. Cheaper, and the quality is not as good.

If you read my post from yesterday, you might consider sending out some more made in the USA Valentine cards to the girls at Hope Unlimited.

Like you, I have hearts all over the house all year long. I don't decorate for the holidays much anymore. I guess I could change out the snowflakes on my twig tree and put some crocheted hearts instead. :)

Hope you are having a great weekend. Tammy

  14. No need to get that box out Kim, hearts abide all around your beautiful home.
I too have become a more careful shopper, and stand with you on your soap box. One of the most disappointing things for me of late, is that most of our dinnerware, and home goods, are coming from overseas. I am now looking more in thrift stores.
We have been so busy with our new greenhouse that i haven't decorated for Valentine's Day, maybe next year.~smile~
    Enjoy your day,
    Hugs,
    Sue

  15. Hi Kim, Thanks so much for praying for Olivia! It means so much to me.
I don't put Valentine's Day decor out except a tablescape.
I will put out Spring/Easter decor next!

  16. Oh I could not agree with you more. I am a label checker big time. Isn't it great that some things are still from home? My Clark shoes are no longer made in England - China has the work now. Go figure.

Yes, there are hearts around our home. Always. Your home always looks lovely!!

    Have a sweet day!!!

  18. Dear Kim...I love all of the sweet "hearts" that you have shared! Our home has "hearts" throughout all year long. I have put a few things out just for Valentine's Day...so a bit of decorating in our home. Happy Valentine's Evening to you and your husband! Hugs, Teri

  19. Kim,
I loved this post today. It was so fun and cheerful. The Home Has A Heart - what a wonderful reminder. I put my Valentine's stuff back in the box today for next year. I wanted to tell you that I smiled when I read your comment about your husband singing the Whitney song. That is a favorite of mine and reminds me of my husband. This was such a sweet post, and I loved looking at all the hearts.

  20. It's always great when you have the choice to buy American!

I don't do a few things for VDay but I get an early start so stuff is up for more than a few days.

  21. Thanks for not buying China. I agree 100%. I picked up a card last month from China and it smelled like chemicals.
