Calling all Moon Watchers

Last night we got a call from our son wondering if we'd looked at the moon?  Hmmm.... let's see ... we were out driving after dark, but didn't remember noticing the moon.  So, out in my fuzzy bathrobe I crept to see what was so interesting up in the night sky.
At first I noticed a full moon, but didn't think that was remarkable enough to warrant a call.  Right then my husband said "wow, look at that ring around the moon!"  It was a huge, perfectly round circle.  I did my best to capture it in a photo, although I will admit moon photography is not a skill that I possess.  Anyhow, I think you can see the ring around the moon up above ... can't you?  Please say that you can :).
Did you happen to see it with your own eyes in your own night sky?  We have never seen anything like it and were hoping that the weatherman would tell us more about it (as he often does), but he let us down.  Maybe it's not that unusual and we just don't moon gaze often enough.  I'm hoping one of my smart blog friends can tell me more about it as I know some of you are moon watchers and moon photographers.  I suppose I could Google it, but that requires more effort than I'm able to muster in these days following Christmas.  Speaking of Christmas, I hope you all enjoyed a memorable day.

  1. Beautiful! Yes, I do see the ring! I have heard this explained but have forgotten,,,, old age you know!~smile~
    Happy New Year, Kim.

  2. it will actually be at its fullest point tonight at 6:53. Its a full cancer moon and venus us retrograde , so speak gently to those you care for even if it seems they are trying to rile you:)
it will make for a more peaceful few days in your world.

lovely photo and yes I can see the outer ring.

  3. I did notice the moon, but saw no ring around it. Perhaps I'm not observant. I DO see the ring around this shot. It's a good one.

  4. What a beautiful shot of the moon, Kim. I most definitely see the ring. I heard someone say it seemed there were two full moons a week apart, but I don't know if that is possible? Of course we rarely get to see anything due to cloud cover, smog and pollution here, but I will be looking for it tonight. xo

  5. We took a few pics here in Florida, too when it was just rising. We've noticed the ring but never got good photos of it like you did! Fabulous photo!

  6. Yes, I saw the ring also, my son called me outside to see it! Awesome!

  7. I don't think I've ever seen a ring like that around the moon. I did see it in your picture.
I'll check out the moon tonight.
Great shot by the way. You did good!! : )

  8. No, I didn't actually see the moon but I did notice how much light there was in our bedroom. Great shot of the moon, Kim!

  9. This post sure made me smile this morning. Only you could make me smile when showing a ring around the moon. I did not see it, but I am thankful you got a picture of it. I think you are a great "moon photographer!"

  10. You did a great job of capturing that moon. Moon photography is not easy....that I know! Beautiful. I don't think there was a moon to be seen through our clouds last night. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Yes! I did see the full moon with a ring around it. I believe that the ring is caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere. I had company for dinner so I didn't take time to get my camera out. So glad to see you captured it nicely!
    Happy New Year!!

  12. Beautiful photo. We were out that night, or the one before, and noticed the stunning moon here, too.

    Happy New Year, Kim!
