How was your weekend?
Did you do anything fun/interesting?
We decided to tackle something on the "to do list".
For the past few years (okay, two to be exact), we've sat down together and made the list.
We did a pretty good job of tackling last year's list.
Although there was one thing that carried over to this year and that was finding a new pedestal sink and faucet for the powder room.
The current model has been serving us for the past 17 years.
Although most of those years I have found it to be on the skimpy side.
By that I mean it is a challenge to find a bottle of soap that will stay put while also leaving room to turn on the faucet. Through the years the soap has fallen overboard on more than a few occasions.
The other issue with the current sink is that shiny brass faucet.
Not only is it out of fashion, but a closer look would show the odd shade of green it has turned over the years. Along with the green "patina" the minerals in our water have been leaving an impossible to remove build-up on the brass.
No amount of scrubbing makes it look nice.
I think I've turned a blind eye to the whole thing.
Although when I stop and think that this is usually the only bathroom our guests see, I know it's time for an upgrade.
A weekend trip to a nearby bath/kitchen & lighting showroom was where we found ourselves on Saturday.
Last year we tried the local hardware type shops with no luck.
It was fun to see what the current trends are.
Space limits us from having a sink with a cabinet below.
So, we looked around for one that would be slightly wider with a nice space for placing the soap bottle.
This one seems to fit our requirements.
From there we checked out the faucets.
We knew that brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze and chrome were out for us. While there were a few shiny brass options, we wanted something different. We're leaning toward a "champagne brass" finish. Still brassy, but not bright and shiny.
The selection of light fixtures in this shop was amazing.
It's been a long time since I've shopped for any and they have changed a lot since then.
The chandelier above took my breath away.
I'm not sure I've ever seen one that I loved more.
I've always though a pretty chandelier over the bathtub would be delightful.
Just for the heck of it I checked out the price tag.
Thud!
At nearly $2200 I'll content myself with a photo.
For now I'll just be happy to get that sink and faucet crossed off the list.
Lighting shops like that or even displays at Lowe's overwhelm me. It is just so hard to make a choice and the expense! You are remarkably patient to tolerate the former sink so long. I think I would have been doing something ridiculous like hanging a soap bottle from the ceiling. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI agree, they are overwhelming. They also make me think everything in my house is looking very dated. Hanging soap bottle? Ha! Hadn't thought of that one.
DeleteI think that new pedestal might do the job, and your choice of staying within the 'brassy' shades for the faucet is a good idea with that stunning wallpaper. Love the frameless oval bevelled mirror - definitely elegant Kim.
ReplyDeleteThat chandelier IS gorgeous, I've never seen one with the ceiling feature attached. Remember though, I believe NC code doesn't allow a hanging light fixture within the reach of a water source such as a tub or shower. I wanted one in my tiny bathroom but the electrician refused to hang it because it could be touched if one stood on the edge of the bathtub, and electrocution possible! It was a plain metal one one so I had him hang it in the potting shed instead. Just saved you $2,200 again, haha!

DeleteSo, did you pick anything out? It looks like from your bathroom photo that you might have room for a small vanity/cabinet underneath the sink? There are ones you can get that just have the two doors that open up into one space - no drawers on the side. That's what we have in our small master bathroom.
ReplyDeleteWe are leaning toward the slightly larger pedestal, but haven't settled on anything for sure. While a cabinet would be nice, it would be a very tight squeeze with the way the door opens into the room. While at the shop I asked the sales lady if she knew of any vanity types that might fit our space and she said no. At this point I'm thinking a pedestal sink with more surface area will be a huge improvement.

I've always wanted a pedestal sink so when we built our addition (2006) we put one in the upstairs bathroom. It has room for hand soap but not much more but I have a narrow cupboard that fits between the sink and the wall for more storage.
ReplyDeleteThat is a pretty pedestal sink! I really like the wallpaper and sink that you have now. It would be pretty in our log home. :) I love to get something new for the house. Our home was built in 1989, and so many things need to be replaced now. I LOVE a beautiful chandelier too!

ReplyDeleteWow that is some expensive chandelier but it is NICE.
Getting to these fix-up projects takes time and a lot of effort to choose the right thing. I really like the pedestal sink with more space for the soap bottle. That's a beautiful chandelier - good thing it can't hang in your bathroom (according to Mary's comment).
ReplyDeleteThat chandelier is stunning. I'd love to have it in my home if it weren't for the price tag. And that sink looks great--sleek and modern, but not too flashy. I think most people don't put much thought into their sinks, but the sink can be one of the most important pieces of decor. In a lot of ways, it's basically the focal point of the bathroom.
