Fresh Buttermilk

Shortly after breakfast on Saturday Brett announced that he
was off to prune the nandina bushes.  Seems the gardening section of the morning paper suggested that now was the time for this task if your nandinas have been looking a bit leggy, which ours have.
My only request was that if he lobbed off any berries, please don't toss them.

When the job was done I was presented with a pile of red berries and a pile of yellow.

Looking for a way to enjoy them in the house, I decided the yellow ones might add a sunny touch to the kitchen table.
Looking around for something to put them into I settled on my milk jug.
I'm thinking it now looks more like a Buttermilk jug.

Speaking of buttermilk, are you a fan?
While I've known people who can drink it by the glass, I prefer it in blueberry pancakes, muffins and many other baked goods.

  1. Love the look of your nandina berries in the jug. I'm not a fan of drinking buttermilk, and never seem to have it on hand for baking either. But when I do, it makes a big difference in the quality of the finished product. If I don't have it I end up adding vinegar or lemon juice to milk and it's not quite the same.

  2. The berries are so pretty! No, I don't like buttermilk, but I think it sounds rich and nourishing.

  3. Beautiful berries, perfect container! We only have red ones - and they are actually in the neighbor's yard but hang over our fence!

Yes, I use buttermilk quite often, not to drink but in baked goods mostly. Today I'll use it in the carrot raisin muffins I'm planning to bake - if I can ever get off this laptop, haha!

Have you enjoyed the kefir/juice smoothies yet Kim? I'm now trying the strawberry kefir from Trader Joe's and like it.
Bob has really enjoyed these healthy drinks whilst his mouth heals from the dental surgery.

Cold today, but lovely sunshine this morning - hope you are having the same down the highway!

  4. Kim, you ended up with a most beautiful arrangement! I love the way the sun dances with the shadows, don't you? It's so perfectly delightful, and made for a dramatic photo. I also love the milk jug you put the berries in, and your kitchen mats are so spring like and cheery.

I don't drink buttermilk from the store, but when I make butter on occasion, I LOVE to drink the buttermilk remaining from the process - it's absolutely the most delicious buttermilk!

    Blessings and hugs,

  5. Perfect place for those berries. No, I don't like buttermilk but my Mom loved it. My uncle would crumble cornbread into a glass of buttermilk and make that his supper. Maybe I am missing something.

  7. They look so beautiful! Glad that they were not tossed before you could enjoy them. I like buttermilk in the same ways you do and not to drink.

  8. So beautiful, Kim, I am a buttermilk, drinker, though not as much as my Mother, she drinks a glass a day, I am wondering if that is not why she looks so young. The other day while out at a dr's visit with her, some lady thought we were sisters, ~smile~
Thanks for sharing, are you longing for spring as I am?
    Blessings,
    Sue

  9. Very pretty berries, Kim. I do like to drink buttermilk with a little salt sprinkled on top. I don't indulge often, but when I do i think of my Dad as he enjoyed drinking buttermilk and introduced it to myslef and my siblings when we were children.

  10. Just think, you can even make buttermilk jugs look good! My grandma would tell me that buttermilk makes every recipe more moist and taste better. I thought of her as I read your post. I do not drink it , but it is in my refrigerator right now.

  11. For years I wouldn't even drink milk, but I finally acquired a taste for it. Buttermilk is only for cooking, imo. :) I don't normally keep it on hand, so when a recipe calls for it, I'll put some vinegar into my regular milk. The berries look very pretty in your milk jug!
